Marley and Me – life and love with the world’s worst dog. This is a lovely story about a yellow Labrador called Marley and the couple, John and Jenny Grogan, who take him on as a pup – the book describes how they grow up and have a family together with the dog exerting his influence all along the way.Set in the US initially Florida’s West Palm Beach I particularly like the episode where Marley goes to a dog friendly beach – causes havoc and finally drinks seawater with the inevitable explosive purge from both ends – culminating in a dog ban on that beach. There are accounts of Marleys destructive fear of storms and his loyal protection of his family and children in particular – his visits to the vet and much more.I don’t usually read these types of books because the ending is inevitable and sad – but I’m glad I read this one – I found myself laughing out loud within a few pages. It affirms my opinion of dogs – they offer us unconditional love and endless entertainment.
