Review by Barbara Simpson:
I am a great lover of Hemingway and I do not think that anyone can tell a story about the Spanish Civil War as well as he can. This book is about the Spanish Civil War but in comparison to Hemingway it fades.
I loved Victoria Hislops 'The Island' so I was really looking forward to reading another of her books but I was very disappointed with The Return. The story starts off in modern day and goes back to the Civil War. An unhappy London girl visits Granada because of her love of the Salsa dance and unknowingly goes into the very bar which was the home of her Mother. The 'flashback' sections to the Civil War are very revealing, and echo many of the facts about this traumatic period in Spains history.
I found the characters unconvincing and couldn't engage with them. The story was at times too over the top to be true (I found myself saying at times 'oh, come on you can't be serious) and very predictable. Perhaps if I wasn't such a fan of Hemingway I would have had a different view of it, who knows?
