Eating For Victory is a fascinating compilation of recipes and hints issued in leaflet form by the Ministry of Food during and after the Second World War when rationing was in force and ingredients were very limited. The facsimile leaflets lend a feeling of total authenticity to the book and I think it would make and excellent stocking filler not only for anyone who remembers the War but younger people who might be interested in learning more about exactly what life was like and how people managed to overcome the privations and stay fit and healthy. Some of the recipes are quite amusing in this age of plenty, but are we much better off now?
Obesity was very rare indeed and it certainly wasn't because people didn't have enough to eat...(comment from show host was that they couldn't afford to drive everywhere either so they cycled or walked which again was healthier.
The book is published by Michael O'Mara Books Ltd and costs £9.99
