Review by Brian Lowen on Thursday 13th November 2008:
A collection of 255 short stories, all true, from over 900 years of sailing, from strange ships and sailing trips, death-defying journeys in freak weather, hair-raising encounters with pirates and sea monsters, and high-seas oddities spanning three centuries. These are some of the stories I found enjoyable:
The Flying Dutchman - a very strange story of a ghost ship. Ships that have seen the Flying Dutchman and survived, say its sails have an eerie glow. Those that passed close enough to see on board, tell of a lone sailor on deck, a tormented soul, with age of eternity on his face.
The Real Robinson Crusoe - the ghostly lady of Goodwin Sands.
Captain Bligh's amazing journey after the mutiny on the Bounty
The stories start in the year 1120 and go in date order up to the last one which is in 2004. Each story is only 3-4 pages long, some even shorter. It's the sort of book you can just dip into now and again. I found it very enjoyable in short bursts and recommend it as a 'christmas stockingfiller'.
This is one of a series of books featuring strange stories about different sports & activities such as football, television, rock & roll, the list is endless.
