Review by Brian Lowen on 30th October 2008
This is a 'Jack Reacher' thriller. Jack Reacher is a well known character in Lee Childs' novels. JR lives off the grid, he is a lone righter of wrongs, irresistable to women. The thinking readers action hero, A sort of maverick James Bond who is answerable to no-one, who travels the country with just a toothbrush as luggage. Men want to be him, women want to be with him.
Six shots ring out in a city plaza & five people are killed. It seems an indiscriminate killing but it isn't. Only one of the 5 was meant to be killed - the others were killed to make it look indiscriminate. Several clues lead the police to James Barr as the killer and it appears to be an open and shut case. James Barr protests innocence and asks them to find Jack Reacher. He knew him when they were both in the army and involved in a similar incident.
Nobody can find Jack Reacher but he reads about the murders in a newpaper and sets off to get the details. He becomes involved and gradually takes apart what appears to be a perfect solution to the crime. Too perfect in fact
I enjoyed this book, it is a typical Lee Childs and a typical Jack Reacher.
