This book came out in 2007 but only now is on the shelves. Lesley Pearse is a consummate story teller and once again she takes us back to the 1950’s with a murder mystery and an orphaned girl who goes through an awful lot of suffering before a happy ending. Camellia Norton is orphaned at 15 when her mother's body is fished from a river in rural Sussex. When she discovers a cache of letters amongst her mother's effects she realizes that the past she has always been so sure of has been built on a tissue of lies. Camelia runs away to London and loses herself in the city that offers opportunity, temptation and danger, especially to a young girl hungry for love and acceptance.
It is well written but I was rather shocked by the very descriptive sex scenes which I suppose were necessary for the story line but rather off-putting when you are expecting something more prosaic!! However, the author keeps you guessing till the end of the book and the supposed dénouement is quite a shock
