DBC Pierre - Vernon God Little

Review by Malcolm Martland October 2008
I'm reading 2003 winner Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre. Hard going - partly because of the colorful language which is a bit too much even for me. It's about a school kid who is being investigated over a street shooting - he does not appear to be guilty but cannot or won't account accurately for his whereabouts- and he does have the weapon hidden away in his room! Vernon is a typical can't be bothered type of kid and ends up in trouble because of it.The local society is fun though - his mum is friendly with the judge and they all eat boxes of fried ribs as if a world famine was imminent. It is funny - hilarious in places - but I don't find it a gripping read - I'll need a really long train journey to get on top of it.
