This is Radio Scilly's Book Club with Bourdeaux Bookshop of St Mary's.
Hello & welcome to the first bookshow of 2009 with myself Linda Thomas and my guests Barbara Simpson, Brian Lowen & Maggie Perkovic, yep it’s a similar format show as those before xmas with a host of guests & some light hearted banter we hope.
We are looking at new releases for 2009 as well as ‘Costa Awards’ shortlist and a couple of reviews from our guests, as well as finding out if they made any ‘new years resolutions’ (like not appearing on this show anymore). Welcome back…….so any newyears resolutions then guys? I never bother, if you’re gonna do something then do it, why wait until the 1st Jan but hey if it works for some why knock it? Brian had 1 resolution which was to walk/exercise more. Poor chap lost his dog recently so is now going to take his wife (I trust it would be without the lead). But this made me wonder if there were any books out there on quirky/humorous newyear resolutions and there wasn't really but found these on the net:
I will not look at boys - 13 year old girl
I will not tell the same story at every get together- Incorrigible bore

If I see a UFO I won't tell anybody about it – Spoilsport

Just for today, I will not sit in my living room all day in my nightdress. Instead, I will move my computer into the bedroom - computer geek.
I will no longer waste my time relieving the past, instead I will spend it worrying about the future - no hoper.

People must have thought me a bit of a perv when I was on holiday in the Dom Rep in December as I suddenly started wondering what other people were reading on holiday (god how sad am I) so I started making notes of the different authors I could see without actually going up & staring straight at the person…just side long glances as I made a point of walking past them. Will look at the list next week.
Nothing to do with books but watched the film MamaMia on the plane, I kept putting it off as I’m not an Abba fan but you’ll watch anything to pass 9 hours of flying. I thought it was cheesy & it was weird seeing Pierce Brosnan sing; Meryl Streep has got a good voice, bet they had fun making it.
