Barak Obama - Dreams From My Father

Review by Maggie Perkovic 26th Feb 09.
I bought this with a booktoken from Bourdeaux and found it absolutely riveting!
Obama born to a white mother and a dad from Kenya describes a life that starts from birth to his wedding to Michelle.
We learn of his confusion as growing up he has to decide which path to take, and easy decision? Not really, a black man in a mixed world. His grandparents on his mothers side a re white Americans, his fraternal grandparents are black, his stepfather is from Indonesia and he lives there for a large part of his young life and finds the politics confusing.
Returning to live with his mother's parents and going to college, he is in a world of interns and baseball and some very racist views. How he comes to terms with these and with his divided inheritance is written clearly and articulately and points to the leader he has now become.
It is a beautifully written, personal memoir steeped in honesty.
To show how honest he tells of the time his father came to give a talk at his college and how embarrassed he was at the thought of this because of the poor background his father had, but how he had the attention of all the students once he started talking.
