review by Lydia Birch June 2009.
I hated this book by helen Oyeyemi.
it was recommended for me because i like spooky stories.
but this is not a spooky story its just really really odd and i have to admit i sent it back to where i bought it from after attempting to read two chapters, which was more than enough!!
it was supposed to be set in a haunted house in dover, kent.
but the way it was written just didnt make any sense at all.
all the chapters started with things like, as it was or there had been!
and the general story i think was about a lady called maranda who was buried in the cellar, with apple in her mouth to keep her quiet, because shed started eating the walls, which were made of chalk!
the chapters were made up of various people asking where this woman was and saying she had a disease called pica, which she got from eating too much chalk from the walls of the house!
it was far too odd for me and if you see it in a charity shop for 50p leave it there!!
