Review by Corinna Christopher on shfow Sept 3rd 2009.
Started this by finding it rather boring and repetitive. A man and his young son walking alone through a burned out apocalyptic world, in the USA. Everywhere is dead, the land is mutilated and horrifying, dead bodies here and there. They are seeking the coast armed with a cart of scavenged food and a pistol. Always on the look out for lawless bands of people.
There is much talk of cold and snow and rain and the frequent lighting of fires every time they stop. The text is sparse but the talk between man and boy is moving and credible and I did become more engrossed in their plight as the book unfolds.
The bleakness of a supposed nuclear winter is expertly captured. The love of the father for his son shines through and the resourcefulness of the human spirit is uplifting.
There is not a happy ending but there is much to think about in this different book.
What do other readers think I wonder?
