Review by Brian Lowen on show 10th Sept
Another Book in the FBI agent Alex Cross series.
The Storyline :
Alex Cross is on vacation when he gets the call. A town in Nevada has been annihilated and the Russian super-criminal known as the Wolf is claiming responsibility. Major cities around the globe are threatened with total destruction unless a billion pound ransom is paid and the thought of such dark genius at work makes Alex’s blood run cold.
Cross is catapulted into an international chase of astonishing danger. Arriving in London, he fights his way through a torrent of false leads, impersonators and foreign agents. Then, in the most unforgettable finale, Alex Cross confronts the truth of the Wolf’s identity – a revelation that even Cross himself may be unable to survive.
I am afraid I found this story rather hollow – there seems no substance to it. It is just one long catalogue of shootings and explosions as Alex Cross flies around the world meeting so many people that you cannot connect. You do not feel involved in the characters and even the love interest within his broken family is dealt with too superficially.
I found all the hype on the book cover to be grossly exaggerated – it did not thrill me and it did not grip me as a good thriller did. When Westminster Bridge in London is blown up, I completely lost any belief in the story. To my way of thinking, a good book has got to make you believe in the characters and in the situation they are put in – this book didn’t and I was relieved when I got to the end.
