Julian Fellowes - Past Imperfect

Review by Maggie Perkovich on show July 2009
Damian Baxter is very rich but he has one concern which is becoming more urgent as the weeks go by, who should inherit his fortune?
A letter from an ex-girlfriend suggests that as a young man Damian may have fathered a child but the letter is anonymous. Finding the truth will not be easy and the only man who knows how to look is Damian's sworn enemy.
The story takes us back to the year of 1968, lavish balls and parties, debutantes and the eligible men who accompany them.
Julian Fellowes is a very clever writer responsible for 'Snobs' his previous novel which was a bestseller. He has also written the script for Gosford Park and the young Victoria and many more. His writing is very intelligent and enjoyable and although I really enjoyed this book the characters are such that I was unable to feel any sympathy for them. They inhabit a world of parties and holidays the like of which the ordinary man or woman in the street would never inhabit. The magazine 'Hello' or 'OK' would love them.
However, his observations of people in general is very perceptive and very amusing. His descriptions of a stay with a warring married couple is quite hilarious and the bedhopping which appears to take place shows that even in 1968 morals were on the decline!!
All through the story he mentions of a terrible occurrence on a holiday in Portugal where all the characters are gathered and finally in the closing chapters we find out what happened!!
I think this will be a best seller, it is a Galaxy Richard & Judy shortlist.
