Kate Atkinson - When Will There Be Good News

Review by Babs Simpson on show August 2009
I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them but this is even better - absolutely terrific. It opens 30 years ago with a terrible and horrific event, then moves to the present day. One of the main characters is 16yr old Reggie who works as a Nanny for a GP and her slightly dodgy husband. Reggie has had a lot of trouble in her young life, but is very bright and has the strength to carry on with amazing cheerfulness and not a hint of self-pity.
There is a terrible train crash in which Atkinson's private detective, former policeman Jackson Brodie, is badly injured. Reggie, staying in a house backing on to the crash site, saves his life, then involves him in a desperate attempt to find her employer who has disappeared from home taking nothing with her but her baby son. The DI who is reluctantly on the case and is loathe to believe Reggie's theories, is Louise Monroe, who has a previous association with Jackson Brodie.
This is a very satisfying story - a marvellous plot brilliantly executed - and with great flashes of humour which made me laugh out loud.
I would recommend it to everyone. Even if detective novels aren't your thing, please give it a go. You won't be disappointed, I promise you!
