Meg Rossoff - How I Live Now

REVIEW BY MAGGIE PERKOVIC ON SHOW SEPT 24TH 09

NEW YORKER DAISY WAS BORN AS HER MOTHER DIED. NOT MANY CAN BOAST KILLING THEIR MOTHER AT BIRTH BUT I DID, AND THEN LATER ON MY FATHER MARRIED AGAIN SO I HATED HER AND THE NEW BABY ABOUT TO BE BORN, SO I CAME TO ENGLAND.
THIS IS HOW DAISY EXPLAINS HERSELF IN THIS BOOK. SHE IS MET AT THE AIRPORT BY EDMOND HER COUSIN WHO IS FOURTEEN AND DRIVES A CAR AND SMOKES.
AUNTY PENN, HER MOTHERS SURVIVING SISTER LIVES ON A FARM, WITH 16yr OLD OSBERT, 9yr OLD PIPER 16yr OLD ISAAC AND THE AFORESAID EDMOND.
ENGAGED IN IMPORTANT WAR WORK, THERE IS AN IMMINENT WAR, AUNTY PENN SOON VANISHES AND THE CHILDREN ARE LEFT TO THEIR OWN DEVICES WHICH IS IDYLLIC TILL THE WAR BEGINS.
THEIR HOUSE IS USED BY THE ARMY, THE GIRLS AND ISAAC ARE SENT AWAY AND EVERYTHING STARTS TO CHANGE FOR THE WORSE. VARIOUS BAD THINGS OCCUR UNTIL THE CHILDREN ARE RE-UNITED FINALLY, BUT EDMOND AND DAISY WHO HAD BECOME VERY CLOSE ARE ESTRANGED UNTIL THE FINAL CHAPTERS.
IT IS NEVER FULLY EXPLAINED WHAT SORT OF WAR IT IS, THERE ARE MASSACRES AND UNEXPLAINED KILLINGS AND ALTHOUGH IT IS WRITTEN IN THE PRESENT DAY, IT HAS AN OLD FASHIONED APPROACH I THOUGHT.
EDMOND IS A STRANGE YOUNG MAN AS HE CAN TELL WHAT DAISY IS THINKING WHICH IS RATHER UNNERVING FOR HER.
IT IS AN UNUSUAL BOOK BUT NOT VERY BELIEVABLE I FELT.
