Alexander Kent - Man of War

Review by Brian Lowen on show Feb 18th
The latest novel in the continuing saga of the Bolitho family from Falmouth, Cornwall.

The saga started with Midshipman Richard Bolitho and we followed him through the ranks until in the 22nd book he reaches the dizzy height of Admiral. Two books later he is killed in action and now the saga continues following the fortunes of his cousin, Adam Bolitho.

This is the fourth book in the series about Adam. I have been a devoted follower of Alexander Kent and have read all his books in this series. However, my enthusiasm for these stories of the golden age of fighting sail is now waning because Mr Kent seems to be running out of good stories. His style of writing seems to have changed and has become flowery and vague. I think he has lost his enthusiasm for the Bolitho family!

This book is set in the time after slavery was abolished and Adam is chasing renegades still involved in the trade and is in command of the seventy-four gun ship Athena in the Caribbean.
