Philippa Gregory - The White Queen

Review by Maggie Perkovic on show 18th Feb 2010
I loved this book!!
It tells the tangled tale of Elizabeth Woodville who met and fell in love with Edward 1V the reigning King of the York dynasty. He too was bewitched by her and went through a wedding ceremony which was held in secret and possibly was unlawful as he had been married before. There are other claimants to the throne and the profound rivalries between the houses of York and Lancaster will never be laid to rest.
The central figure of Elizabeth is fascinating indeed, she had been widowed in battle and sought help from the King for her first family. After she married the King she went on to have many more, including the tragic Princes' in the Tower, supposedly murdered. Here the author lifts the blame from Richard 'Crookback' and points it in the direction of Henry Tudor.
This is the first in a stunning new series, The Cousins' War, which shows what research and skill Philippa Gregory has. I feel she sometimes mixes fact with fiction but her books are always well written and the characters rise from the pages to enchant their readers and immerse them in the history of the plots and the stories.
We are all familiar with the Wars of the Roses, red for Lancaster, white for York, that became united with the Tudor Rose when Henry Tudor married Elizabeth daughter of Edward 1V to cease the factions being continually at war.
I look forward to the next book in the series!!!
