Simon Kernick - the Business of Dying

Review by Brian Lowen on show 13th May 2010.
Another story involving Detective Sergeant Dennis Milne, a rogue cop who has his own, sometimes illegal, solutions for dealing with the criminals he catches.

It is a cold November night and DS Milne is waiting to kill three men. Cynical and jaded, Milne earns money on the side by doing what he does best : punishing the bad guys. But he has been set up. This time, instead of shooting drug dealers, he kills two customs officers and an accountant.

So he goes after the guy who set him up and unravels a complicated web of criminals involved in kidnapping teenage girls for the sexual gratification of perverts.

It transpires that the three people whom he shot were actually involved in this sordid business but that still doesn’t make Milne feel much better.

Working on his own, having to have had to resign from the police, he shoots his way through the gang and ends up injured but triumphant.

He evades capture by the police and jets off to the Phillapines to start a new life. It is up to you to decide whether he should have got away with killing all those people, even though they were criminals. He doesn’t escape scot-free though as his girl friend is killed by one of the crooks, who Milne makes sure comes to a nasty end.

A rather bloodthirsty thriller which I did enjoy and could recommend to anyone not too squeamish.
