Andrew Gross - The Dark Tide

Review by Brian Lowen on show 19th August 2010.
For Karen Freidman’s family, bad luck is just beginning.

It starts with her husband Charlie’s investments going wrong and the sudden death of a much-loved family pet. Then one morning Charlie takes the train to work – straight into a lethal terrorist bomb blast. For Karen and her children, all that remains of Charlie is a memory.

When the Freidmans begin to receive terrifying threats, Karen turns to Detective Ty Hauck for help. Hauck’s family fell apart too after a tragic accident which he still blames himself for. Now he is determined to keep Karen’s family safe as he has become very fond of her and so he takes time off work so that he can devote himself entirely to tracking down these mysterious people who are demanding the return of several million dollars that Charlie lost from their investments.

Later, when viewing some news reports of the bomb blast at New York’s Central Station, Karen is horrified to see her husband’s face amongst the crowds staggering out of the station.

Charlie is not dead but has taken the opportunity provided by the terrorist’s action to escape from the terrible financial situation he had found himself in and create a new life for himself down in the Caribbean. So he now has not only the thwarted money men trying to find him but also Ty, and his wife, Karen who is furious for being put through all the trauma of his supposed loss and now wants some answers.

The tension is well built up as they all try to track down Charlie. A very good thriller that is well written and cracks along at a good pace. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can well recommend it. I also have another book by the same author, Andrew Gross, entitled Don’t Look Twice which also features Detective Ty Hauck which I am looking forward to reading.
