Simon Hall - The TV Detective

Review by showhost.
The setting is Plymouth . A local hard-nosed, thoroughly disliked businessman is found dead in a lay-by, shot with a shotgun. The number of suspects could number into the hundreds as this bloke was public enemy number 1.
Dan Groves is Environment Correspondent on local tv station ‘Wessex Tonight’, a job he loves. But he is transferred to the Home Affairs, or crime beat for ITV South West by his unliked boss. Dan Groves, is invited by the police to tag along with one of their investigations and help them out by reporting on the news when it is likely to benefit the enquiry. The Police don't like having to share their information with him but he does strike up a sort of friendship with the DCI in charge and there is obviously some conflict with what he is allowed to report and what must be kept under wraps. At the same time he has his hard nosed producer making insatiable demands for an exclusive story.
Dan helps to solve the murder case and gains respect from his police colleagues.
Dan Groves and Adam Breen are presumably meant to be chalk and cheese figures: cosy local environmental reporter Groves, put out of his depth by being given the crime beat and slick professional detective, Breen, smart alec know it all who doesn't suffer fools.
Dan Groves lives with Rutherford, his dog, but is looking for romance.
In this the first book, we get to meet the characters who return in other books and I presume the character who may be the romantic partner he is looking for

The murder case is a decent 'whodunnit', the plots are not overly complicated.
a simple detective story with some good characters and a good plot.
