Review by Babs on show 27th Jan.
Clare Chambers is a new name to me, but if this novel is typical of her others, I shall certainly be looking out for more.
Unusually for a female author, she has written the story from the point of view of a man and I have to say it works very well.
It is told in a series of flashbacks during which we follow Christopher Hinders’ Life from childhood with his parents and brother in a modest London suburb, to University, to a meeting with a man who is to have an effect on the rest of his life, giving up Uni, writing a novel, having a major love affair and eventually marrying - not happily.
Care Chambers writes very well, describing emotions in a matter-of-fact way, not over-dramatizing anything, but giving a quite extraordinary and empathetic insight into the behaviour of her characters.
She is a very talented author and I found myself absolutely involved with
— Christopher and everything that happened to him to such an extent that
although the ending was satis I wanted to carry on reading. The Independent on Sunday describes Care Chambers as a “diamond in the dust” which I think it is a bit over the top, but I think I know what they mean!
