review by Brian (Biggles) Lowen on show 13th Jan
I greatly enjoy Peter James’ novels that feature Detective Roy Grace of the Brighton Police Force and with titles that always feature the word “dead” in them. This is not one of that series and I must admit that I did not enjoy it.
The book deals with regeneration into a former life under hypnosis which I found rather boring and skipped through some of the longer descriptive sections.
The story centres on Charley, who, with her husband Tim move out of town into Elmwood Mill, an idyllic mill house with a cluster of outbuildings, a mill pond and a swirling mill stream roaring over a weir. The house is run down and in need of renovation so the couple get the builders in to start upgrading the building.
Charley has a strange feeling that she has been here before, although she knows she hasn’t. Sinister memories of a previous existence start to haunt her. Despite both their attempts to dismiss everything with rational explanations, the feeling turns to certainty as the memories become increasingly vivid and terrifying. Charley is persuaded to undergo hypnosis to seek out the truth about this previous existence but only opens a Pandora’s box of evil…and now the terror is free and her friends start to meet untimely deaths.
A good story if you are a fan of ghost stories but it was not my cup of tea.
