Joseph O'Neill - Netherland

review by showhost
if you like the written word and cricket this is the book for you.
What is the book about?
A Dutchman and his English wife and child leave London to go to live and work in New York. They play cricket in New York and he plays for a local team on Staten Island. His wife becomes unhappy and goes back to London with their son. The man stays on in New York living in a hotel room as do other misfits until a year later when he returns to London to try and make his marriage work.
Thats it!
The whole 270+ pages are about the people he meets and the history of cricket. Its a descriptive narrative, why use one sentence to describe a way of life when 10 will do? Its a descriptive, deep, reflective prose on love, life, friends, places and cricket.
It was heavy going in parts but absorbing in others. I was glad to finish it so I could move on to another book.
