Clive Cussler and Jack du Brul - Dark Watch

review by Brian Lowen on show 5th March
An action packed thriller of the James Bond ilk. Good reading if you don’t take it seriously!
Juan Cabrillo and his expert team aboard the Oregon are a privately funded team of security experts who have been tasked to seek out and destroy a bunch of pirates in the China seas.
Their ship, which is disguised as an old freighter is packed with expensive equipment and a variety of powerful weapons. They soon come upon a bunch of pirates, which they take out but this only leads them on to a vast human trafficking operation. Hundreds of Chinese, desperate to escape their poverty stricken lives, pay thousands of pounds to escape the country for a better life in America, only to find themselves shipped into a large illegal gold mine on a peninsula in north eastern Russia where they are forced to work as slave labour in the mine.
The story rolls along at a cracking pace until the final dramatic conclusion on the beach by the mine as a volcano erupts above them and a violent storm blows in.
This is pure escapism but great fun, if you like that kind of story. Recommended.
