PAUL TORDAY - THE GIRL ON THE LANDING

review by Babs Simpson live on show 7th June 2012
This author's first novel, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, was a huge success and was recently made into a film. I look forward to reading it as well as his second - The Irresistable Inheritance of Wilberforce - which was another great critical success.

The Girl on the Landing is about a married couple, Michael and Elizabeth. He is wealthy, decent and locked into the routine of working as Secretary to his Gentleman's Cub in Mayfair (which provides much humour during the course of the story) and country pursuits on his run-down estate in Perthshire. Elizabeth has married him, not exactly for money - she is in fact very fond of him -
but their marriage is largely passionless and quite boring.

However, after a weekend with friends in Ireland, Michael begins to change into a spontaneous and passionate man who is fun to be with, to Elizabeth's delighted surprise. But what has triggered this change? The story gradually exposes the reason, building tension and mounting horror as it unfolds.

This is a very clever, well-written story, the characters are believable, and I'm really glad to have read it. It's intelligent and satisfying, so why not give it a go!
