Simon Kernick - The Last 10 Seconds

review by showhost I read Payback, which I enjoyed although it was a bit too James Bondy at the end. This book was written prior to that one. It is another rip-roaring, page turning novel from this author. But a health warning to Fiona & Ro as it has lots of graphic crime scenes and murders. It features DI Tina Boyd, whom we’ve met in previous novels, and Sean Eagan. Tina Boyd is a bit of a maverick operator with a drink problem but an honest cop. Sean Eagan is also a maverick, working undercover but this time far surpassing his legal limitations. To infiltrate the gang he has been after, to avenge the death of his brother, he finds himself part of a kidnap job. They have a plan to spring a convicted serial killer, the Night Creeper, and Sean has to stand by, to keep his undercover role safe, as a policeman is shot and wounded. Unbeknown to Sean Eagan, DI Tina Boyd has been investigating and trying to convict this same serial killer, who is suspected of torturing 5 women to death even though he has an alibi for one of the murders. However, he does have information which could lead to other gang members being arrested. The gang have to silence him fast! The plot has the usual mix of vicious gang members, the government and corrupt police officers. If you want a book that will make you late for work and play, because you just can’t put it down (especially as the pace mounts) , then this is the one.
