Book Review written and read live on bookshow by Maggie Perkovich on 28/8/14
My sister and
I had a week at Butlin's Skegness in the late fifties and had a
cracking
time so I was keen to read this paperback which tells how Billy
Butlin
transformed the lives of Factory workers by setting up his camps where
you paid
for the entertainment plus the accomodation plus the food all in. A
bit basic at first,
these days I believe it is much better, it drew people
from all over the country
who had a jolly good time and often came back year
after year.
In this book we meet all those wonderful Redcoats who joined a
Butlin's and
often met their future wife or husband in the process!!Some left
an unhappy
home to make a new life for themselves or just for a change of
jobs.
I would like to have met some of the visitors as well but even so, this
is
very interesting read,( my word how hard these Redcoats had to work !!!)
and
brought back a lot of memories from this happy camper.
A lot of
entertainers started at Butlins and are proud to admit it!!!
Recommended,
especially if you have visited a Butlin's!!!Maggie Perkovic.
