Book Review written by Maggie Perkovic & read live on bookshow 23rd April 2015.
This is a story about Lorinda whose
mother gave birth to her out of wedlock and then left her with her Grannie
while she
went away to try and find a new life in London. Grannie died and
her mother not
returning Lorinda was sent to live with Auntie Doris and Uncle
Harry who ran a
boarding house down the line and from then on treated like a
skivvy/slave, not
allowed to go to school and treated as worthless because of
her circumstances.
Her only friend was Johnny Fenwick a fourteen year old
apprentice who cheered
her up with his friendliness and peardrops.
Her
Uncle frightens her with his sudden cuddles and kisses and some years
later
a dreadful incident occurs which makes her leave early in the morning
to make her
own way in life. A girl living in a house she is working in,
befriends her and gradually
she learns how to read and write and finally has
enough education to train for
a nurse. She marries the son of the house but
sadly the terrible incident with
Uncle Harry ruins her marriage, and her life
seems in pieces. Until the Great
War starts when everything changes and with
her meeting her mother again,
finding her first love Johnny and knowing that
there can be a happy ending of sorts
in the end.
Enjoyable, readable
interesting. Recommended. Maggie Perkovic.
