I got to page 25 and had to re-read it again, once I looked at the synopsis, as I couldn’t understand what was going on. But basically it is a love story based around Henry & Clare. But what makes this different is that Henry has a genetic disorder which he can not control. This genetic disorder makes him time travel mainly in the past but sometimes in the future. So at the beginning of the book Clare is 6 and Henry is 36 when he first meets her and Clare falls in love with him. But when Henry goes time travelling he suddenly appears in the nude which I found a bit disconcerting to read about a 6yr old girl suddenly being surprised by a naked 36 year old man.
Nothing else time travels so there is always a heap of clothes on the floor when he disappears, his fillings stay behind, so he also has holes in his teeth when he gets to wherever he is going. He has to learn to beg, steal & borrow as he time travels with no money, and he needs clothing & food.
Clare & Henry marry and find life interesting dealing with his continual disappearances and how their romance & Henrys other conquests and loves develop or devolve by going back in time with him. He also meets up with himself at different ages
I found myself often looking back to see where he was the paragraph before (ie date & year) but I did think how clever? Diffcult? it must have been to make sure the dates were always matching with ages of Henry & Clare & other friends & acquaintances.
I didn’t find it the tearjerker that some reviewers did, maybe because the story was constantly disrupted with Time travelling & me trying to keep up with him. I have spoken to others who found it too complex to keep up with so they gave up after the 25 pages.
The one thing I can say is that it certainly ends with a twist so I agree that the last 100 pages keep you turning.
A review from www.goodread.com
‘..Then unfortunately it lags for 200 pages with less time travel and more love story. The final 100 pages are back to the earlier top form and the book ends with a bang. The beginning of the book was a bit complex but towards the end of it you wonder at the simplicity of it’.
