This is the first Victoria Hislop I have read & if this is the usual standard I won't be reading another. Spanish Civil War, family torn apart, girl coming back to find her mothers roots....it should have been riveting, heartbreaking but I just didn't care.
I couldn't bear to read anymore about Javier! How many times did Mercedes repeat who he was, how they had danced, how she loved him....blah blah.
The first interesting bit was page 296, then it was page 496. And was I surprised by the ending - no!
The characters I never cared about as they were like cardboard cut outs. In fact I couldn't wait to finish the book so I could start on another.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the book. I did. OK, so it was a little predictable, but then what do you want to relax with and not stretch the mind too much? You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but thankfully that's all it is.
