Review by Steve Watt, Dec 2009.
Best Book I have read for 2009 is undoubtedly 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel even though I'm only on page 400 (about two thirds through the book). A brilliant historical novel and so different from her earlier books especially 'Beyond Black.' Basically it tells the story in a contemporary fashion of the rise to power of Thomas Cromwell (not to be confused with Oliver who came along later). Based on fact it tells the story of a son of a violent blacksmith he became Henry VIII's confident. I've noticed on reader's reviews on Amazon that many people give up on the grounds that it is too hard and confusing. Persevere and you shall be rewarded with rich literary prose and sumptuous descriptions of life at many levels in the 16th Century.
