Jodi Picoult - Change of Heart

Review by Lesley Jones on show 8th April
Shay Bourne - New Hampshire's first death row prisoner in 69 years - has only one last request, to donate his heart after his execution, to the sister of his victim, who is looking for a transplant. Bourne says it's the only was he can redeem himself, but with lethal injection as his form of execution, this is medically impossible.
A young local priest, is called in as Shays spiritual advisor and plans to convince him that redemption has nothing to do with donating organs.
But Bourne begins to perform miracles in the prison which are witnessed by the officers, inmates and the priest, he becomes known as the Mesiah by the media.
Shay Bourne is a simple carpenter and not very literate but starts quoting verbatim from a gospel that was rejected by the Christian church 2000 years ago. (sound familiar?)
I enjoyed this book very much, it was very controversial and raised a lot of questions. I can understand how people say it is taken from Stephen Kings 'The Green Mile' and indeed if it were a film it may turn out identical but I think Picoult makes you seriously stop and consider the issue where Stephen Kings doesn't. So I am on the 'love it' side of the Marmite crowd. I think with this book you have to read it and take in what you are reading, not skim over it. Would you want your child to have the heart of the killer of your family or would you rather she die....?
