review by Babs Simpson on show 15th April
As well as novels, I also enjoy a good murder/thriller and I have just read a really cracking one.
This is one in his series about DI Roy Grace, is based in Brighton and is an excellent story. The action takes place in winter of 1997 with flashbacks to a very important part of the plot starting on September 11th 1991 - a date which none of us will ever forget.
Ronnie Wilson, a failed Brighton businessman is in New York on that day and as the appalling events unfold he sees his opportunity to disappear off the face of the earth, to shed his debts and reinvent himself in another country.
In 1997, the discovery of a womans body in a storm drain in Brighton sets off a murder investigation headed by inspector Grace which eventually links up to Ronnie Wilson.
Meanwhile another strand of the story follows Abby a young woman who is being relentlessly hunted down like an animal in the streets and alleys of Brighton.
All the characters, some we have met before in previous Roy Grace books, some new, are very well written and as for the action - well, all I can say is that after coming to the end of one incident I found myself gasping - I hadn't actually been able to draw breath while reading it!
It is not very often that the twists at the end of a book is so unexpected but the very last word of this book took me completely by surprise to the extent that I shouted out loud!!!Don't miss it!
