Took to the streets for this show. Had a chat to Maggie Perkovic who had just read the latest Andrea Levy book which she enjoyed very much. Its come at a popular time for this author as the televised book 'Small Island' has just been showing. Tried the library but nobody in so ambled along to the Atlantic Hotel for a cuppa with the gals. There I found Nan Cons, Peggy Discombe, Babs Simpson and Alex Fairest. We had a chat about the topic from last week 'The Lost Man Booker From 1970'. Peggy gave us her list of 'holiday books'. I had to read the following article which was sent to me by email because I found it astounding:
Worker dead at desk for 5 days
Bosses of a publishing firm are trying to work out why nobody noticed that one of their employees had been sitting dead at his desk for 5 days before anyone asked if he was feeling ok. George Turklebaum, 51, who had been employed as a proof reader at a New York firm for 30 yrs had a heart attack in the open plan office he shared with 23 other workers. He quietly passed away on Monday but nobody noticed until Saturday morning when an office cleaner asked why he was working during the weekend.
His boss said “ George was always the first guy in each morning and the last to leave each night so no one found it unusual that he was in the same position all that time and didn’t say anything. He was always absorbed in his work and kept much to himself”.
A post mortem revealed that he had been dead for 5 days after suffering a coronary. George was proof reading manuscripts of medical textbooks when he died………..(reading was on the wall - or book in this case...)
Also, having mentioned the library, there is an autobiography coming out by Keith Richards (Rolling Stones fame) and in it he makes a startling confession: he wanted to become a Librarian!! Well there's a job going over here Keith love, if you still fancy it! Comes with a uniform (twin set and pearls)! Hey, only joking - I used to be the librarian remember.....
