Harriet and Joseph emigrate from England to Christchurch New Zealand in 1864. The harsh life they lead nearly finishes them until he finds gold in their creek. He becomes obsessed with the idea of making his fortune and abandons his wife to travel over the Alps to the West Coast gold fields. This is a hostile wilderness where many others are searching for 'the colour' Harriet eventually joins him to continue the search for gold and the story describes her survival in very difficult conditions.
Another of my favourite books from my bookshelf.
