Simon Kernick – Deadline

Review by showhost
Another 50p holiday book from the charity shop to put in my suitcase, and another fast paced thriller from this author. You can always be sure of a cracking read with him. And, It’s hello again to the story’s main characters, Mike Bolt, Mo & Tina (old friends from another book) who work for the Serious & Organised Crime Agency.
Andrea gets home from work to find the house unusually empty, no daughter and no husband. Nobody has seen or heard from them.
A phone call informs her that her 16yr old daughter has been kidnapped & £1/2mil ransom is needed for her release. NO POLICE involvement. She can’t cope on her own so she phones her ex-boyfriend, ex-London gangster, now living in Spain. When he is declining to help her she drops the bombshell that her kidnapped daughter is actually his daughter too.
The ransom plan goes horribly wrong, her ex is killed and her daughter is still hostage only now they want another £1/2mil payment.
Out of her mind with worry, Andrea is stopped for dangerous driving and the kidnap story comes out. Mike Bolt and his SOCA team are brought in to run the operation.
But Mike Bolt and Andrea knew each other from 15 years ago when they had a wild 2 month fling while she was married. A fact he doesn’t want to mention to his bosses as he would be taken off the case which he doesn’t want to happen especially when Andrea informs him that HE is actually the father of the her kidnapped daughter, a daughter he never knew about …..(complicated hey). He is desperate to stay on the case and find his daughter but he’s worried that the circumstances will cloud his judgement.
When the second ransom goes wrong Mike Bolt is taken off the case but operates outside of the law…
Hold on to your hat and enjoy the ride!
