Annie Murray - Meet Me Under The Clock

review written by Maggie Perkovic & read live on bookshow 5th March 2015
Growing up in Birmingham siaters Sylvia and Audrey Whitehouse were always like
chalk and cheese. When the second World War breaks out Sylvia is still thinking
ahead to her forthcoming mariage to Ian but Audrey jumps at a career change
and joins the WAAFs.
They live next door to the Goulds, Marjorie and Stanley. Pauline and Ted Whitehouse
had Sylvia and Audrey plus little brother Jack, a brainy boy at Grammar School.
Their neighbours had Raymond, Laurie and Paul, all boys and the children
were good friends when young but drifted apart as they grew up.
As the pressures of rationing, bombing raids and sleepless nights take their
toll the two families face tragedy and heartache on a high score.
Sylvia starts work as a Porter with the railway which puts her at odds with
her fiance who says it is not "very feminine", and when she brings home
a friend from work, Kitty, very pretty and sweet, her  happiness
with Ian seems very much in doubt and her future not so assured.
Another rattling good story about difficult times and the bravery of
normal citizens thrown into abnormal situation.
Well written,
Maggie Perkovic.
