Peter James - The Truth

Review by Brian Lowen on show 8th April
The same author who writes the series featuring Roy Grace of the Brighton Police Force.
These books all have “dead” in the title and are good detective thrillers.

Susan and John Carter are crazy about each other and life is perfect but for one thing – they are on the brink of financial disaster. Surely being a surrogate mother to another man’s child won’t harm such a strong relationship? Especially when the mysterious Mr Sarotzini is offering to save their home and business – everything they’ve worked for.

What seems like a perfect solution begins to feel like an impossible situation. Susan’s pregnancy is disturbingly painful but no one will tell her why. It becomes apparent that Sarotzini wields immense power and Susan begins to doubt everything she knows. As she realises the terrifying origin of the dark forces Sarotzini controls she is in fear for herself and John but mostly for her unborn baby.

The book deals with the complicated clash of emotions in surrogacy. Although Susan and John agree to go ahead, tensions build as Susan suffers a painful pregnancy and John becomes concerned that she is loving her baby that has been fathered by another man.

Then strange things start to happen involving the occult and witchcraft and Susan fears her baby, which must be handed over at birth, will be used as a sacrifice to the devil.

I found the book hard going in places with not much happening for long periods. I also found it unbelievable in places – for instance, I could not understand why they didn’t seek alternative medical help for Susan’s terrible pains rather than sticking to the doctor arranged by Sarotzini. I did finish the book but did not really enjoy it. Maybe it is a book for believers in the occult.
